Thursday Press #12: We NEED to talk about Instagram
[13 JAN 2022] how to promote your IG content on Pinterest if you absolutely must
If you're like me, the first place you started marketing your services was probably Instagram. And if it's still your primary marketing platform, there's a good chance you want to grow it.
I definitely do!
But when you're thinking about diversifying your marketing to Pinterest, think of Pinterest as its own marketing platform with its own strategy, not as something to grow your Instagram (another marketing platform)
Now before you head on back to your overcrowded inbox, hear me out.
It's not impossible to grow your Instagram account using Pinterest.
But it certainly wouldn't be my recommendation, as you'll find it difficult to see growth on both Pinterest and Instagram.
When someone clicks on a link from Pinterest to your Instagram, the user experience isn't great, especially if that user doesn't even have an Instagram account.
Furthermore, Pinterest's robots 🤖 can't easily crawl the details of your post, making it difficult for them to tell if the content is related to what you've posted in your pin title and description, meaning it'll be less likely for your pin to show up in search results.
If you're really set on growing your Instagram account through Pinterest, here are my top tips:
Add your IG handle to your Pinterest bio, and make sure your Pinterest username is the same as your Instagram handle
Repurpose Instagram content into idea pins. You can't link out on idea pins, so you don't have to worry about the bad UX
Include calls-to-action on said idea pins to drive your audience to your Instagram account

It will be more difficult to track if users actually go from Pinterest to Instagram, but that's what I'd recommend.
