Thursday Press #18: be like a polaroid picture...
[24 FEB 2022] February Pinterest updates & a lesson on perfectionism
And no, I don't mean by shaking it (we all know that's actually bad for pictures, right?)
Hey Ya! reminiscing aside…
Disposable cameras are having a ~moment~, popping up in wedding planning TikToks and '90s aesthetic listicles.
A few years ago, it was the little Instax polaroid cameras
In an age of phones that are practically DSLRs and Hollywood-quality video cameras, why are we falling in love with grainy, blurry, quality-not-guaranteed photos?
It's precisely for those perfectly imperfect qualities. People are tired of the over-filtered, highlight reel, so why are you still holding your content to that standard?
I'll be the first to admit I chase perfection a little too much, so let this be your (and my) reminder that done is better than perfect, and no one notices the imperfections anyway.
Everyone's going to be too focused on your magnetic energy to notice that typo in your carousel.
We are our own worst critics, but I promise, no one is paying more attention than you are. (Except for maybe your mom, because that's what moms do, but only with love.)
So now let me embrace that “messy action” energy and finish this email out with some new Pinterest updates for you:
1. No More Claiming Instagram, YouTube, or Etsy Accounts
Just a few weeks after Pinterest ditched the option to claim your Instagram account, Etsy and YouTube have also left the building. Now, when you go into the “Claimed Accounts” section of your settings, you'll only have the option to claim your website(s) and connect a Shopify store. Example below.
What does this mean for you?
For most people, probably not a lot. But if you've been hosting your podcasts exclusively on Etsy, or driving your Pinterest traffic exclusively to Instagram or YouTube, this is your giant flashing neon sign to get a website up ASAP.
Pinterest is focused on two things: keeping users on the app to increase activity on the platform and increase ad revenue, and if they have to send users elsewhere, let it be to an individual's website, not one of their competitors.
Of course, you can still link to Etsy, YouTube, and Instagram, but many users are experiencing slower results with links to these sites, so users beware.
2. Your Favorite Keyword Tool is Back!
That's right, the search bubbles are back for most accounts! When you make a search on Pinterest, switch the filter from “All Pins” to “Videos,” and above the search results, you'll see a bunch of different colored bubbles with suggested keywords.
This is a super easy way to compile a bunch of keywords that Pinterest users are already searching, making them great options to include in your pin titles and descriptions.
Have you noticed any of these things in your Pinterest browsing? I'm curious to see if the experience is the same for every account!
