Thursday Press #19: stop and smell the... daffodils?
[3 MAR 2022] a lesson on green thumbs, patience, and Pinterest
IT LOOKED LIKE A ROTTING ONION.
It was a chilly fall day and my mother had dragged me outside to help her plant some bulbs with the promise of ordering pizza and watching our favorite show together.
At 14, I already knew I hadn't inherited my mother and grandmother's touch for gardening. My thumb was more yellow than green… 👎
But with my mom's guidance, I carefully separated the odd, flaky daffodil bulbs and planted them in a row along our front curb, covering them with the fallen leaves that would protect them from the mildly cold Virginia winter to come.
When we were done, there was no evidence of our hours of work, and for the next several weeks, I could no longer distinguish where we'd planted each individual plant-to-be.
Lo and behold, when spring came knocking on our door, green shoots started sprouting out of the ground, and soon our yard was full of buttery yellow blooms. 🌼
I was reminded of this experience during one of my daily walks recently, when I saw a daffodil growing on the edge of the lake near our house.
I don't know if this blossom was carefully cultivated by a neighbor or a natural feat of survival, but I do know that it was growing underground for months, unnoticed from the outside, before it burst forth with cheerful beauty.
Pinterest is a lot like that.
There's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, both on the platform and off, that doesn't always show up in the tempestuous analytics charts.
Like the daffodil, you may be working for months on your Pinterest account before sitting back and leisurely enjoying the fruits of your labor.
All this is a reminder that if you want Pinterest to live up to its fullest potential for you – getting client inquiries on autopilot and making passive income automatically without selling on Instagram stories every day – you need to plant the seeds before the freeze.
Start preparing your Pinterest marketing strategy before you get so booked out with client work that you can barely clear your inbox, let alone learn a new marketing platform.
And by starting early, you're giving Pinterest the 3-6 months (or more) it needs to really start working for you. Because it can. You just need to give it a little TLC and some patience.
