Thursday Press #23: It's never been business as usual...
[31 MAR 2022] get an inside peek at my brand values
Here's the thing, friend. I started my business in the middle of a global pandemic. And I didn't leave a 9-5 job to do it – I just tacked it on to my freelance/gig-worker rap sheet.
Since that day in September of 2020 when I took the leap, I've experienced loss, change, joy, stress, peace, and unimaginable worldwide turmoil.
For me, and probably for you, too, there's never been a “business as usual” period. Because life doesn't work like that.
A friend of mind shared a meme that said: Adulthood is saying “But after this week things will slow down a bit” over and over until you die.
And I felt SEEN.
I'm bringing all of this up because a conversation in some IG comments made me start thinking more deeply about my brand values, which, to be honest, live mostly in an amorphous word cloud in my head and not in perfect, vision-board worthy sentences.
But the circumstances of my starting and growing a business are definitely ones that shape the way I approach running my business and working with clients, so I wanted to share a few of those thoughts with you today.
Sustainability
Before we are brands, we are people. So life happens, plans get derailed, and you can't operate at 100% capacity 24/7/365.
One of the reasons I advocate for Pinterest as a marketing platform is because it simply demands less of your time and energy, and I believe it's a wonderful part of a sustainable marketing strategy. Less burnout and overwhelm, more time for personal growth and rest.
Sustainability also includes accepting each other's humanity. We all make mistakes, and it's okay. I won't hold you (or myself) to any expectation of perfection.
Accessibility
No gaslighting, gatekeeping, or girlbossing over here!
I believe in making information available to as many people as possible and empowering business owners to make the right decisions for themselves without icky “bro marketing” tactics.
If you want to know what some of my other values are in general, I shared this on my Instagram story earlier this week, and I think it sums things up pretty well.
