Thursday Press #29: hopped off the plane at ARN?
[12 MAY 2022] how my background makes me a better Pinterest manager
✈️ HOPPED OFF THE PLANE AT ARN WITH AN ENGLISH DEGREE AND A CARDIGAN…
I don’t know about you, but my feed is full of retrospectives set to another Miley Cyrus song, Malibu – “I never would have believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here”
And it has me reflecting on where I was 3 years ago.
Let’s set the scene:
It was 2019 and I’d just graduated (as I write this, it’s actually exactly 3 years to the day of my graduation) with a double major in English and poli sci, with no job offers and no plans to get one.
I had a ticket to Stockholm Arlanda Airport where I’d spend 3 weeks visiting family there before heading back to NC to apartment hunt with my partner.
It was so completely different from what my roommates were doing (marketing, business, and PT) that there was some underlying part of me that thought I was failing.
But here’s the thing, I refused to let that fear trap me into a 9-5 where I was stuck doing repetitive tasks that bored me to death while I built someone else’s dream. No thanks.
That’s just part of my journey of falling into entrepreneurship, and I’m sure we share some similarities there.
But what I actually want to share today is how despite not having corporate experience with Pinterest, my background still makes me the best choice to manage your Pinterest marketing.
First, addressing the most common question I was asked after “Sarah with an ‘h’ or without?” – “What are you going to do with an English degree?”
I’m not a teacher, I’m not an author, and I didn’t go to grad school. So what the hell does knowing what the green light means in The Great Gatsby have to do with Pinterest?
It means that I’m really good at writing very quickly, and finding lots of ways to say the same thing. This is essential when it comes to creating new pin descriptions and repurposing content on Pinterest. The 4+ years I spent as an editor in the publishing industry doesn’t hurt either. 😉
It also means that I’m a total word nerd, so if that's you, hiiiiii! 🤓
And what about that collection of odd jobs?
Name a freelancing site and I’ve been on it. Yes, Upwork and Fiverr, but also petsitting, nannying, grading… I’ve done everything from editing resumes, reporting on local elections, blogging about interior design, email campaigns, copywriting, even the odd HTML fix.
My marketing education was more trial by fire than structured curriculum, but it means I have a wiiiiide range of skills. Skills that all have a part in your success on Pinterest.
Last, but certainly not least, there’s one thing you should know about me – I’m a chronic Googler. If there’s a question, I’m going to find the answer. If there’s a problem, I’ll find a way to solve it.
Whew. I’ve talked a lot about myself in this email, and for an introvert who famously doesn’t like the spotlight (despite my Leo sun sign ♌️), I’m going to close the curtain on this digital performance.
