STOP PUMPIN' THE BRAKES ON PUMPKIN
How early is too early to start decorating for fall?
No, seriously. I turned 24 last week (hooray! And no, I don't feel any different), but since my birthday always comes around the beginning of school, it feels like after August 19th, it should be time to start getting into the fall spirit.
Bring on the PSLs, red and orange leaves, and cozy sweaters.
Unfortunately, the North Carolina weather has a different idea about my desire to live in jeans and knits…
But at least Starbucks and my local grocery stores are standing in seasonal solidarity with me. There's already Halloween candy everywhere. Y'all, there are more than 2 months until one of the admittedly best holidays, why are we sooo ahead of schedule?
From a marketing standpoint, it actually makes a lot of sense. People are planners, and Harris Teeter knows it.
(if you have strong grocery store opinions, pls reply and let me know, I am fascinated!)
Sure, you'll always have the last-minute shoppers picking up the last mix bag of Milky Way, Snickers, and 3 Musketeers on their way home from work on October 31st, but in general, people plan and buy in advance for holidays like Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day.
It even works for the non-planners. I can admit I've been swayed by an early Halloween and display and then had to rebuy for trick-or-treaters…
What I'm saying here is that marketing, and marketing on Pinterest especially, isn't something you can really do by the seat of your pants, whipping up a pin for Halloween party DIYs on October 30th and hoping it'll go viral by the next day
Say it with me: Pinterest is a long-term content marketing platform.
If you think the neighborhood book club chair, soccer mom, PTA prez is a planner, just wait until you meet your Pinterest audience.
Already the trending searches on our fave visual search engine are leaning away from beach vacations and towards fall outfit ideas and homecoming nails.
According to Pinterest itself, here are some of the top rising searches on the platform currently:
Halloween app icons
6x increase in searches for fall outfit ideas
Fall decor
and maaaaaany more that prove this point
Obviously, not all business niches have such obvious seasonal differences, but there are still ways you can incorporate the autumnal energy into your content marketing.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Designers → fall-themed portfolio examples, for clients or for passion projects
Social Media Experts → important fall holidays to include in your content plans
Systems Pros → how to start preparing your biz for holiday leave
Anyone → embrace the back-to-school vibes and share your routines & rituals
