Thursday Press #41: what mattress shopping has to do with online business
[11 AUG 2022] how many idea pins is the right amount?
Edge support, individually wrapped coils, and cooling memory foam… oh my!
I've gone down a deep rabbit hole of mattress shopping to replace our current mattress that's definitely past its recommended lifespan.
There are two things that I've learned from this experience:
1. I'm a sucker for a quiz.
If you're looking to add a lead magnet to boost your email list, try a quiz. I, for one, quite literally cannot resist it.
One of the “mattress-in-a-box” companies has a quiz to “find your perfect mattress,” which I obviously took. Even though I didn't agree with the results of the quiz (and used a fake email to get said results), I still appreciated the extra element of personalization it gave to the browsing experience.
2. Balance is key.
I like a firm mattress. My partner prefers soft and plush. The middle ground is obvious here – medium firm mattress rated a 6-7 on the firmness scale.
Oh yeah, there's a scale.
You'll notice that our happy medium isn't exactly in the middle of that 1-10 scale. There's a reason.
Balance doesn't have to mean a 50/50 split. Whether we're talking mattress firmness, work-life balance, or content types, you get to decide what feels balanced to you.
Personally, I don't want work to take up exactly 12 hours of every day. And I'd rather err on the side of too firm with the ability to add a plush mattress topper.
When it comes to the kind of content you create, the meaning of balance gets even more fuzzy.
One of the questions I see asked frequently about Pinterest (and what's often miscommunicated or misunderstood) is about the ratio of idea pins to static pins.
Spoiler alert: there's no one perfect ratio.
But I do recommend finding a balance between creating solely idea pins and solely static pins.
For some of my clients, that looks like 1 idea pin/week. For some, it's closer to 3 or 4 per week.
Because every business and every account is different. So you need different strategies to achieve different goals.
I get it, though. “It depends” isn't a very helpful, jazzy answer. So here's the quick and dirty:
If you're just starting out, stick with static pins for a few months. Those will always be the bread and butter of your content.
If you're using idea pins, be consistent. Not every one will take off, but over time, those views will grow.
1 idea pin per week is what I'd recommend to boost your audience and brand awareness; more if you're trying to take advantage of the Creator Rewards program.
