Thursday Press #92: what was I thinking?
[10 AUG 2023] 10 pm panic purchase and Pinterest Trends
"Umm... there aren't any words on that."
It's 10:00 p.m. at the Walmart in Monkey Junction and I'm desperately searching for a newspaper to use for my brand shoot tomorrow (sneak peeks are ahead!)
We can talk about my lack of planning skills later, k?
This poor employee has just shown me their stock of kraft moving papers.
Now I may be part of Gen Z, but I still know what a newspaper is, and I had assumed I wasn't the only one???
Houston, we have a failure to communicate.
Luckily, I found a copy of the Wilmington Star-News at the Han-Dee Hugo's next door and I was all set for my mini-session, but DANG I did not realize how difficult it was to buy a newspaper these days!
What I do realize, though, is the importance of using language your audience can understand.
If you aren't from North Carolina or haven't spent much time in Wilmington, a few phrases so far have likely flown over your head like the sound of adults talking in Charlie Brown.
Monkey Junction, Star-News, Han-Dee Hugo's...
In this case, they're not important for your understanding of the story. In fact, I like to think they add a little detailed flair!
But if you aren't already speaking directly to your audience's inbox like I am, you're going to need to make sure you're using their language, not yours.
BELOW THE FOLD
Sometimes, the things we think are standard vocab for our niche is actually jargon that confuses our audience and ideal clients.
When you're marketing on a search-based platform like Pinterest or Google, it's beyond crucial that you know exactly the terms your ideal clients are using to search for content like yours
Because if you're out here describing your brand design service as an online makeover, those are going to turn up two pretty different sets of results on Pinterest. 👀
Granted, that's a bit of an extreme example, but the point stands.
You need to be using the right words and phrases to describe your content on Pinterest.
And the best way to make sure what you think your people are searching for actually lines up is by using Pinterest Trends.
Pinterest Trends is a native Pinterest tool that shows you the historical search volume on a scale of 0-100 for a bunch of different keywords.
It will show you up-and-coming trends of the week in several different niches, and it is also helpful to plan your seasonal content in advance.
But today I'm going to show you how you can use Pinterest Trends to double-check your keyword research
The setting: You're a brand photographer and you're trying to figure out how to describe the portfolio images you're pinning to your account ↓
Brand vs. branding, photoshoot vs. photography… there are a lot of different options here!
So let's head over to Pinterest Trends and see what the users are actually searching for…
In case the image is a bit small:
blue = branding photoshoot
purple = brand photoshoot ideas
green = brand photography inspiration
Compared to the other keywords, branding photoshoot is the most commonly searched.
Now, there wasn't an option to directly compare “branding photoshoot” with “brand photoshoot” (an inherent limitation of Pinterest Trends), but just the fact that branding photoshoot is the most general option offered tells me that term is the one being searched most often.
So what do you do with that information?
You don't have to only use “branding photoshoot” as your keyword.
You can (and should) still use a variety of phrases and different keywords throughout your Pinterest content, but I would definitely prioritize “branding photoshoot” if you have to make the choice.
In fact, using these different keywords is one of the ways I suggest to get more fresh pins from your content! Want more ideas? I've linked one of my most popular blog posts below 👇

Now it's your turn!
I encourage you to try this out in your own industry and see if any results surprise you! If you do try it, I'd love to hear back and see what you found!
HOPE THIS SPARKED SOME IDEAS!
